Madison County School Calendar Approved for 2013-2014
The Madison County school board approved the 2013-2014 calendar.
The 2013-2014 calendar falls under a 2012 state law restricting when school can begin and end and has students beginning classes on Aug. 19 and ending the year on May 23, 2014. There is no fall break and Thanksgiving break is from Nov. 27 through 29.
Christmas break will be from Dec. 23 through Jan. 1 for students and employees. Students also have Jan. 2 off.
The board also approved an alternate calendar for 2013-2014 that would go into effect if a proposed bill allowing school districts relief from the state's calendar requirements is passed. Sen. Bill Holtzclaw, R-Madison, has introduced the
School Calendar Opt-Out Bill, which would allow the requirements of the 2012 law to be waived so school could start sooner.
The alternate calendar would have students beginning classes on Aug. 6 and ending the year on May 22, 2013. It also includes a week-long fall break.
