One of the greater Huntsville region’s most unique features is its relatively limited sprawl. Hemmed in by mountains and the Tennessee River, the city itself and its development has remained mostly contained, sparing the open spaces and farming communities that have coexisted with it for generations.
One of the greater Huntsville region’s most unique features is its relatively limited sprawl. Hemmed in by mountains and the Tennessee River, the city itself and its development has remained mostly contained, sparing the open spaces and farming communities that have coexisted with it for generations. So, while many families enjoy living near the conveniences of downtown Huntsville, there are also plenty of opportunities for those hoping to spread out on a few acres.
The land surrounding the Huntsville metro area has lots of real estate with ample acreage, diverse terrain, and the prime benefits that come with them: peace, quiet, picturesque views, and room to breathe. Look east for the mountains and plateaus of Jackson and Marshall Counties that overlook the Tennessee River, Lake Guntersville, and their many tributaries. Outer Madison County and Limestone County to the north and west feature properties with big skies and expansive views of rolling hills and broad farm fields. Head south over the Tennessee River bridge into Morgan County with its wildlife refuge and wooded seclusion.
Another benefit of owning acreage in these areas is that most properties, though thoroughly private, are within easy commutes of populated towns and cities with major employers and other business opportunities—the best of both worlds. Athens, the county seat of rural Limestone, is a reasonable commute to Huntsville and Madison’s economic hubs. Morgan County is close to the south gate of Redstone Arsenal and the Marshall Space Flight Center; it also has Decatur, a large city on the banks of the Tennessee with its own commercial presence. To the west, in Jackson County, is Scottsboro, a once sleepy town that now enjoys prime proximity to the commercial traffic between Huntsville and Chattanooga, buzzworthy sister cities experiencing a technological renaissance.
