Alabama Teacher Of the Year Down To The 'Sweet 16'
This just in from the
Huntsville Times:
A Sparkman Middle School teacher has been named one of the "Sweet 16" semifinalists for Alabama Teacher of the Year.
Mary Elizabeth "Libby" Parker, a seventh-grade language arts teacher, was chosen by the Madison County school district as a potential candidate and was named as one of the 16 semifinalists Tuesday by state officials. According to a news release from the Alabama Department of Education, that field will soon be narrowed down to the "Final Four."
The statewide Teacher of the Year will be named at a ceremony on May 8 at the RSA Plaza in Montgomery,
the news release said. The ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. on the Plaza Terrace.
The winner is also a candidate for National Teacher of the Year.
Each March, an elementary and secondary teacher is nominated from each of the eight Alabama school board districts, the news release said. Parker was nominated on the secondary level for District 8 and Farrah Kilgo, a teacher at
Ivalee Elementary in Etowah County, was nominated on the elementary level.
On Parker's classroom page on the
Sparkman Middle website, her classroom motto is "Do Whatever it Takes."
"We will do whatever it takes to improve and succeed," Parker writes
on the page.
For her students, that includes studying and reading at least 20 minutes each night. She also expects students to participate in class, show their parents their planner each night and be responsible and respectful.
Parker received a bachelor's degree in special education from Jacksonville State University in 1991 and a master's degree in instructional leadership from Samford University in 2010.
