Huntsville Communities

Huntsville South

Stretching roughly from Drake Avenue south to the Tennessee River, South Huntsville is full of Midcentury gems and contemporary homes alike. It’s a commuter’s haven, situated along major routes to Redstone Arsenal and Research Park.

When NASA made a home in Huntsville during the heyday of space exploration, it touched off an explosion of residential development. South Huntsville was born. Stretching roughly from Drake Avenue south to the Tennessee River, South Huntsville is full of Midcentury gems and contemporary homes alike. It’s a commuter’s haven, situated along major routes to Redstone Arsenal and Research Park. Leave work at work and come home to golfing, hiking, biking, fishing, or simply relaxing in your own ample garden.

Head southeast from the threshold of South Huntsville, crest Walton’s Mountain, and you’ll find yourself in the postcard that is Jones Valley. This tract of stately homes and secluded neighborhoods was developed from parcels of fertile land from Jones Farm in the mid- and late-20th century. Even though the community boasts Valley Bend, one of the region’s most popular shopping centers with scores of popular restaurant and retail chains, the real stars here are the natural ones. Cattle graze amid the serene pastureland on the valley floor, and the surrounding hillsides burst into fiery color in the fall. You’re just minutes from Downtown Huntsville and its economic bustle to the west, but you’ll hardly know it.

Housing Styles

Huntsville South had, at one time, consisted mostly of farmland and cotton fields. With its' close proximity to Redstone Arsenal and the influx of growth that came with the success of Marshall Space Flight Center this area began to boom. Pockets of neighborhoods began to spring up as landowners sold off their properties. Ranch style and split level homes are in abundance, as well as, newer custom built homes.

This area also houses what is known as the Medical District. A collection of neighborhoods prized for their close proximity to Huntsville Hospital and surrounding medical facilities, as well as, shopping, dining, and entertainment. The Medical District consists mainly of charming mid-century bungalows, mill houses and row houses.

There is one notably unique property that stands out in Huntsville South. Jones Farm, located in Jones Valley, is a family owned working cattle farm. Acquired by Carl Jones in 1939, this property has remained with the Jones family and is a picturesque reminder of Huntsville's not so distant farming past.

A new community that is unique to the area is currently being developed in Jones Valley called Lendon of Huntsville. It is a traditional neighborhood reminiscent of the days of yesteryear with walking access to Jones Valley shopping center. Another development underway in South Huntsville is located atop Green Mountain of Huntsville called Oak Bluff. Green Mountain can best be described as a nature lover's paradise with country lifestyle with the amenities of city living. One of the best parks in all of Madison County is located here too, Madison County Nature Trail.

Schools

There are several Elementary and Huntsville, Whitesburg, Mountain Gap, and Challenger Middle schools that support this area, as well as, Grissom High School and Huntsville High School. These schools are all part of the Huntsville City School System.
