Huntsville Mill District

The Mill District is a bustling area located in Southwest Huntsville. It has a convenient location to Redstone Arsenal and modern area businesses yet still holds some remnants of the old mill villages that once thrived in this area.

After the Civil War and continuing into the early 20th century Huntsville became a haven for textile mills, such as Merrimack, Dallas, and Lincoln. Each mill served as its' own community with homes, entertainment and shopping all within walking distance of the mill.

Today, the Mill District is a bustling area located in Southwest Huntsville. It has a convenient location to Redstone Arsenal and modern area businesses yet still holds some remnants of the old mill villages that once thrived in this area.

Shopping and Dining

The Mill District, in keeping with its' historic past, is perfectly situated for convenience. Wal-Mart, Parkway Place Mall and many locally owned shops and businesses are right at your fingertips.

There are plenty of restaurants to enjoy with breakfast favorites like IHOP or Cracker Barrel and family favorites like Applebee's. There are also local hubs like Blue Plate Café that serve up tempting southern dishes with a side of infamous hospitality.

Parks and Recreation

A day at the park won't be hard to find in this area of Huntsville. The Mill District is brimming with family friendly experiences such as putt-putt, water slides, arcade games, and more at Southern Adventures Amusement Park. Brahan Springs Park offers an eclectic mix of activities ranging from the usual soccer, baseball, and softball fields to a disc golf course and sand volleyball courts. The park also features a Natatorium where individuals can swim year round and the Everybody Can Play handicap accessible playground. Enjoy watching a minor league baseball game at nearby Joe Davis Stadium or join a league and play ball yourself at the Metro Kiwanis Sportsplex. There are other parks including Kid's Space and John Hunt Park, as well as, the Wilcoxon Ice Complex.

Housing Styles

There are some small ranch style homes, frequently found in most areas of Huntsville, situated in the Mill District. However, it also houses Merrimack Mill Village Historic District and Lowe Mill Historic District, which feature remnants of its' mill town past such as Merrimack Hall, which is now a Performing Arts Center under the same name and Lowe Mill ARTS and Entertainment housed in the former Lowe Mill. The homes in these historic districts represent how the working class lived in Huntsville during the turn of the century with mill houses and two story duplexes lining the streets.

There have been great efforts in the past few years to revitalize the Mill District and preserve its' early 20th century mill homes. It is an area ripe for those wanting to purchase and renovate a historic home at an affordable price.

Schools

There are several Elementary and Middle schools located in the Mill District and Butler High School.
