In the 1980's, Huntsville's archaic road system was proving problematic for many residents commuting to Research Park, particularly those in the popular Huntsville South area. Likewise, Redstone Arsenal with its' security measures and limited access forced most Huntsville South commuters around the massive facility on to limited, overcrowded Huntsville roadways. With Research Park growing and expanding and more people relocating to Huntsville to fill its' businesses and corporations, city planners were left scrambling for solutions.
What followed was a much improved road system with expanded main roadways, additional overpasses, and the addition of I-565 through its' most congested areas, as well as, westward expansion of the city into neighboring Madison.
